Expire was first conceived in 2006 as a collaboration between
Carl Schissler and classmate Thomas Price who aimed to write
and record a short EP as part of a school project. Carl handled
most of the songwriting, guitar, and drums; Thomas contributed
bass guitar and additional songwriting ideas. The EP was completed
and was distributed in a limited run of 50 copies to fellow students.
Upon graduating from high school and attending UNC-CH, Carl enlisted
the help of guitarist David Ruiz and drummer Brian Welsh. This lineup
played a few local shows over the next year, adding keyboardist
Greg Taylor for a short time in the summer of 2007. The band's goal
was to rerecord the original self-titled EP with revised songwriting
and a new lineup. However, lack of interest and time caused delays
for the next year.
In the fall of 2007, Thomas left the band, stating that he was no longer
into playing music anymore. In order to accomodate this change, David
switched to bass guitar and keyboardist Cameron Monie was picked up.
The band continued to play a handful of shows through 2008, but no
progress was made on any new recordings.
In the fall of 2008, there was a mutual falling-out among the members
as they left to pursue other musical interests. Carl continued on
under the name Expire, now providing all instrumental and vocal needs.
In the winter of 2009, the original Expire EP was
re-recorded. Much of the next few months were spent preparing the
album for release and doing artwork for the album.
In July of 2009, the Expire EP was released.
